As Sri Lanka rises to be the ‘Wonder of Asia’ tourism is engaging in promoting the island’s many wonders through out the year with a theme for each month.
January the focus was on – Beaches. The festivities began by addressing the topical issue of conservation by celebrating Beach Conservation Day on 8th January on the southern coastal towns of Negombo, Wadduwa, Kalutara, Bentota and Hikkaduwa.
The Catamaran Race and Photographic Exhibition kept crowds in Negombo enthralled on the 15th and 16th. The activities moved to the southern coastal town of Bentota on the 22nd 23rd , where the Food Festival and Boat race took pride of place at the Beach fiesta.
Sancharaka Udawa the Tourism Mart was held at the Ceylon Continental Hotel in Colombo on the 27th and the apt finale to January’s theme of Beaches was the 1st seminar in the knowledge series- ‘Voyages and untold Mysteries of Marine Life in Sri Lanka’ held on 28th January at the Monara Restaurant of the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management.
